From late November to mid-January, the Amsterdam Light Festival is a favourite, nothing beats seeing illuminated Amsterdam from the canals!
Just keep in mind that in January, we gain about 15 minutes of daylight every week, so if you are thinking of doing this activity in their next edition, check the sunset time before hopping on the first boat.
My advice: If the weather is dry, go for an open boat. Dress warmly—it’s always colder on the water—and if you find one that sells warm drinks, you’re in for the best experience.
The picture in the middle is not part of the Amsterdam Light Festival but is still light-related. Eight vertical lights shine from Amsterdam City Hall, each representing a district of Amsterdam. One additional light was added for Weesp, which recently became part of Amsterdam’s administration.
All boat companies follow the same @amsterdamlightfestival route, but I’m sharing the one we took: @kinboatamsterdam . We found a last-minute boat on the final Saturday of the festival—no advance booking needed. So if you’re looking for a last-minute boat tour, they might be a great option. They gave us complimentary warm tea, and we could use blankets to warm up on the open boat. Why a last minute one? Weather is unpredictable when you book too ahead in advance.
📍They’re located right next to Amsterdam Centraal Station.
