Making Family Photo Sessions Fun and Efficient: A Vacation Story in Amsterdam

Planning a family photo session during a vacation is exciting but challenging—especially with a big family that includes kids and grandparents. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family from Peru visiting Amsterdam, and we made the most of their session with thoughtful planning and a dynamic approach.


To ensure everything ran smoothly, I followed a three-step process to optimize our time:


1. The Questionnaire: I sent them a simple questionnaire immediately after booking. It helped me gather key details like names, ages of the kids, any specific moments they wanted to be captured, and whether there were any concerns or preferences for the session. This gave me a solid understanding of what mattered most to them.


2. Pre-Session Communication: A few days before the session, we touched base to address any questions and review their questionnaire. This gave the family a chance to share more about their expectations and allowed me to guide them on outfits, timing, and what to expect during the session. This is when we set up a location, taking not only their preferences into account but also their location in Amsterdam to make it easy to commute to the location.


3. Dynamic Parallel Sessions: On location, we made the session engaging and efficient by taking turns. For example, while I photographed the parents and kids on one side of a bridge, the grandparents enjoyed their turn on the other side. This made the session feel seamless and kept the kids entertained and happy. The kids were helping to make their grandparents laugh, which made them engaged from beginning to end.


The result was a collection of photos that captured not just their love as a family but also their unique personalities, with everyone looking relaxed and natural.


I am a truly believer that having a well-organized session can make all the difference. Let me share here some of the pictures we captured within 60 minutes of photo session.
